One month ago, beauty queen Mariana Bridi was living the dream of many young Brazilian women, trading her striking good looks for a modeling career that promised to lift her family out of poverty. Last year, she took fourth in the Face of the Universe competition in South Africa and she had won bikini competitions across the globe. Then she contracted a seemingly ordinary urinary tract infection. The bacteria spread quickly and inexorably through her body, proving to be extremely drug resistant. In a desperate bid to save her life, doctors amputated her hands and feet. But by last Sunday she was dead. Mariana Bridi, the 20 year old Brazilian model feet and hands were amputated after she developed septicemia because of a misdiagnosed of kidney stones and then urinary tract infection, died early Sunday morning when her body finally succumbed to the antibiotic resistant bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, that was ravaging her body. AP says:
Bridi had been in the hospital in the city of Serra in Espirito Santo state since Jan. 3. Doctors originally diagnosed her with kidney stones in December, local media said. But as her condition worsened, she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that spread. The cause of the infection was not immediately known. It reduced the flow of oxygen to her limbs, causing her feet to be amputated last week and her hands this week. Part of Bridi's stomach was also removed as doctors tried to contain internal bleeding, local media said. Health officials on Friday said Bridi was not breathing on her own and was undergoing hemodialysis at a hospital in the city of Serra.
Holy shit. She got what they thought was a urinary tract infection and now she is dead. "God is comforting our hearts because he wanted her to be with him now," her father Agnaldo Costa told reporters outside the hospital where his daughter died. "I can't accept that my daughter left us so soon." Her Web site said next month she was to participate in the second stage of a modeling competition held in Sao Paulo by Dilson Stein, the Brazilian model scout who discovered supermodel Gisele Bundchen. Da Costa fell ill in December 2008 when doctors originally misdiagnosed her with kidney stones. In early January, she went into septic shock due to a bacterial infection, probably Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is resistant to most antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an unusual agent to cause a urinary tract infection which appeared to have caused the sepsis.
Later in January, her feet and hands were amputated in attempt to save her life. A part of her stomach was later removed during her final surgery.
She died on the morning of January 24, 2009, in a hospital in Espírito Santo as a result of complications of from necrotic septicemia resulting from the original infection. The cause of death according to the hospital certificate was a severe sepsis, urinary infection and abdominal bleeding which led to the failure of multiple organs.
News of her illness attracted attention around the world, and friends said they had received messages of support from all around the world.
Due to its rarity and public commotion, the Mariana case also attracted a great deal of attention from international press. Her funeral was followed by more than 1,000 people.
